A Bats Theatre production
By Binge Culture Collective (Wellington)
Put reality out of your mind. With the shifting logic of a dream, Binge Culture mix deadpan humour and reckless improvisation. Surprising, absurd and immediate, Wake Less is an investigation of our need for entertainment as an escape and the people employed to provide it. A surreal cocktail of light, sound and mask where the stage is everywhere and the audience is the action.
As an audience member at a Binge Culture performance, you can expect to be included. You might be questioned, teased, looked in the eye or invited to save a pod of whales. Messy, edgy, disorientating and hilarious, Binge implicates the audience in the games they play.
Binge Culture Collective is a Wellington-based theatre company (formed in 2008) that believes theatre should be serious fun, exhilarating and challenging. The core creative team is Ralph Upton (artistic director), Fiona McNamara (executive producer), Joel Baxendale, Rachel Baker, Simon Haren & Claire O’Loughlin. 2011 Chapman Tripp nominee: Most Original Production, This Rugged Beauty. Hailed as one of the NZ Herald’s top theatre picks of 2010 for their double-bill Elimination Rounds.
Premiered by BATS Theatre for the 2011 STAB season and received initial funding through Creative New Zealand.
