Auckland Live offers an initiative called SIGNAL
an accessible programme offering Sign Language Interpreted performances
for the deaf and Audio Described performances
for blind or vision impaired patrons.
Auckland Live has provided interpreted performances to the Deaf community for the past two years. We are looking to develop the skills of interpreters to provide more opportunities for the Deaf to access theatre in Auckland and Nationwide with the Theatre Interpreting Course 2014
Theatre Interpreting Workshop: Presentation
This Sign Language video gives detail about the Theatre Interpreting Workshop. You can download this information here
Audio description captures the visual elements of a theatre piece that a blind or vision impaired person might otherwise miss and describes them in clear and vivid language.
Trained audio describers provide a live, objective and succinct description of the action and visual elements of the play, which is heard by patrons through an earpiece attached to a pocket-sized radio. Introductory notes are read prior to the performance which includes a description of set, props, costumes and characters.
After each audio described performance, patrons can walk through the set, touch set pieces, feel the costumes and handle key props. Tour group sizes are strictly limited and must be booked in advance.
In addition, for every show, visually impaired patrons can call Ticketmaster on 09 970 9745 any time before 5pm on the day of the show and they will make sure the front of house team is aware of your needs.
These shows are aimed at people who are Deaf. Trained interpreters, usually situated to the side of the stage, interpret the script during the performance using New Zealand Sign Language.
Keep up to date with new SIGNAL performances and special offers.
