BURSTING AT THE SEAMS WITH ENTERTAINMENT, SPICE UP YOUR SUMMER IN AOTEA SQUARE!

Get that summer gear out of the cupboard, slap on your sunscreen and dust off your jandals because Auckland Live Summer in the Square is back for 2017 complete with an incredible line-up of free entertainment, activities and performances in Auckland’s Aotea Square.

Auckland Live Summer in the Square will kick off on the 1st of December, giving Aucklanders and visitors to this “big little city“ the chance to make the most of our vibrant arts and culture offerings throughout the sunnier months of the year.

This year’s line-up is one not to be missed. December will see performances from the mixed-ability dance company Touch Compass who are celebrating 20 years of pushing the boundaries of dance, as well as choreographer Rina Chae and her Street Candee crew who will take to the Square to entertain audiences with spectacular routines set to K-Pop hits.

Prepare to be wowed by exceptionally talented youth from amongst the top competitors who took part in this year’s Stand Up Stand Out high school music and dance competition, with genres ranging from RnB, rock to jazz ballet, contemporary to hip hop.

Next up, Street Talk will showcase emerging and underground talents from Auckland’s hip hop and urban art scenes, performing with members of much-loved Nesian Mystik.

Alongside these great performances, the public can test their green thumbs at weekend gardening workshops, and learn from Kai Auckland how to set up an organic edible garden just in time for creating fresh summer salads for the all-important BBQ season. This will culminate in a Neighbours Day lunch in Aotea Square, where a team of volunteer chefs and waiters will serve up a ‘pay what you feel’ lunch to people from across the Aotea Arts Quarter.

Travel back to the 1950’s and have yourself a good old time at Retro Saturday on  9 December. There will be swing dancing classes for all to try, some great tunes playing from the decks of various record-hoarding DJs, as well as the groovy sounds of Tuxedo Swing 12-piece band playing at sundown.

The rest of December will see different DJs spinning, and musicians and dance groups from Aotearoa and overseas performing daily for crowds keen to while away the weekends and extended lunch breaks. There will also be a container café stationed in Aotea Square throughout the whole season where you can purchase a cold drink to enjoy in the sunshine.

Auckland Live Summer in the Square will return after the New Year with more great events and activities. Channel your inner dancing lady emoji with the sizzling Latin Fiesta weekend, where those interested can learn some of the many dances South America has on offer. The Classical Weekend will follow with crowds able to enjoy the uplifting sounds of the APO Young Achievers, and the first-ever joint performance by the Royal New Zealand Navy Band and New Zealand Opera.

January will also see the return of the popular Auckland Town Hall Organ Tours, where visitors will experience a live-stream tour of the organ’s 5000 pipes with a knowledgeable guide.

Beloved Auckland venue, The Civic, will be turned on its head by Wellington’s Barbarian Productions’ wild theatrical pursuits in Grand Opening. This ticketed event has a price of $15 (plus service fees) and will see the madcap company working with performing arts groups from across Auckland.

New Zealand storytelling, poignant and critically-acclaimed plays, and pre-eminent Aotearoa artists will be at the fore over Waitangi Weekend. Mata and the Mysterious Musical Maunga is the brainchild of Jamie McCaskill, - is an Aotearoa musical adventure for 14-year-old Mata. Shot Bro – Confessions of a Depressed Bullet is Rob Mokaraka’s award-winning play that describes his life or death struggle with depression.

All this and so much more! Fill your summer calendar with endless entertainment.
