April School Holidays in Aotea Square media release

CALLING ALL FAMILIES: WE’VE CREATED A CARNIVAL OF FUN THESE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS!

Aotea Square bursts into life these April school holidays with two weeks packed full of fun, free arts and entertainment events and activity for the whole family. From the lively culture of Latin America to the flips, slips and tricks of incredible circus performers - Aotea Square will be in hyper holiday mode!

Kicking off the fun from April 16 is the Auckland Latin Fiesta. One of the biggest Latin festivals in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland this three-day, all-ages celebration brings the sizzle of South America to the Square with free salsa and bachata dance classes, a samba parade, 3-piece flamenco trio, 15-piece Latin band, and Forro Brazilian dance lessons. The bar will be open with delicious drinks to go along with treats from pop-up food trucks.

Hot on its heels, Circus in the Square tumbles into town with Manubrium Circus Theatre's double decker weekends of story time yoga and music sessions; twists, tricks and stilt walking from the Highjinx Youth Company; aerial-style storytelling in Scribbles; the slippery acrobatics from Towel You What?!; six clever acrobats and an accordion in the quirky, after-dark family cabaret Are You Having Fun Yet? and the daring duet of Dream Garden - a beautiful, skilful, and surreal theatre show combining aerial circus, projection art and comedy. Audiences are encouraged to support some of New Zealand’s most exciting circus talent with a koha donation at the end of each show.

The good times continue for all the whānau when free films light up the Aotea Square’s big screen, including the acclaimed documentary I Am Greta; local short doco Rise, in partnership with Doc Edge Festival; and the funny, kid-friendly Motuhake – featuring Auckland Live favourites Jandel J and the Funky Friends.

It’s going to be a massive amount of fun! The Container in the Square Café will be serving hot drinks and food to keep you warm and toasty, so get everyone together and make the most of it.
