My Favourite Place

With a career in the performing arts, Auckland Live programmer Anders Falstie-Jensen has spent more hours than he can count in theatre green rooms around New Zealand. From Dunedin to Tāmaki Makaurau, Anders has seen them all, but it’s the green room at the Aotea Centre’s Herald Theatre that holds a special place in his heart.

From the old show posters on the walls to the saggy bottomed couch in the corner, Anders has many fond memories of the times spent with cast mates and crew on plays he’s been in, written or produced at the Herald.

Anders says his first ever play, The Orderly (2006), was the first time he experienced the buzz of pre-show backstage excitement.

"I love seeing the level of concentration in actors moments before they go on stage.

“Being in the green room always reminds me of the people I've shared space with and shows I've worked on."

Anders thinks people would be surprised at how basic things are in the Herald green room. A vinyl-covered couch, microwave, and kitchen sink are the rudimentary essentials.

And is it painted green? That’s a trade secret Anders prefers to keep to himself!
