Makeover and expansion coming for Aotea Centre

2 August 2017

One of Auckland’s most famous landmarks will undergo a refresh and expansion in an exciting new development set to rejuvenate the Aotea arts quarter.

The Aotea Centre will be transformed by two significant projects that will ensure the building remains fit for purpose for future generations.

The first phase of the development is a refurbishment of the exterior which will result in a distinctive new look when completed, followed by a refresh of the foyer spaces. Work will begin in early 2018 and is scheduled to finish in time for the Auckland Arts Festival in March 2019.

In addition to the refurbishment, Regional Facilities Auckland is moving ahead with an innovative new expansion, which will create New Zealand’s first fully resourced dedicated home for performing arts development.

The expansion will include state-of-the-art specialised studios for music, drama and dance; development, rehearsal and public performance spaces; first-class digital recording facilities; office accommodation; and retail and food and beverage outlets.

"This will transform the Aotea Arts Quarter into a creative hub for generations to come,” says Robbie Macrae, Director of Auckland Live.

Construction is scheduled to start in 2020.
