Published: Thursday 1 August 2024
Auckland Live just turned 10! As we mark a decade of bringing the city performing arts and events to create memories that last a lifetime, we will be highlighting the journeys of some of our amazing staff behind the curtain who make the magic happen.
This week we meet Teremoana Vano.
Please introduce yourself and your role at Auckland Live
Kia Orana. My name is Teremoana, or Tere for short, and I'm the Housekeeping Manager for the Performing Arts at Auckland Live and Conventions. I’ve been in the hotel industry for over 20 years and wanted to try something different so in 2008 I started as an administrator for Security and Housekeeping. This then evolved to a Housekeeping Supervisor Role, and now I manage the Housekeeping Team.
In one sentence explain what your job entails
Managing the maintenance and cleanliness of all our venues to ensure our patrons and clients are happy.
Now, in just one word explain what your job entails.
BUSY.
Paint a picture of a ‘day in the life’ in your role.
Making sure all staff are onsite, then allocating their duties per venue and briefing them on the events happening. Next step is checking events in all areas are ready for client’s arrival, from meetings to planning and organising suppliers and contractors to service our venues.
What do you love most about your job at Auckland Live?
I love how other departments help my team to make things happen and vice versa, from a dance party to a cruise to an AKLPHIL event. Another favourite is back-to-back events where we have a space of three to four hours to turn around the venue. I also love the names that my staff and colleagues call me: boss, aunty, nana, mama, sissy. We really are a family!
What has been the most meaningful moment during your time here?
Cleaning up after the flooding, which covered the Aotea Centre and The Civic.
How would your colleagues describe you in three words?
YOU STILL HERE?
What’s something surprising that your colleagues might not know about you?
I played Women's Rugby League for Glenfield, Avondale Wolves and Ponsonby (my favourite club). I then went on to represent the Cook Islands Women's World Cup team in 2003...I LOVED IT!
