Published: Thursday 31 August, 2023
This year is the 10th anniversary of Word – The Front Line, the largest Poetry Slam Competition in New Zealand, drawing hundreds of young poets from 30 high school teams across from the Auckland region. On Saturday, 16 September, the top six teams will perform, representing their communities to find out who will be crowned the 2023 Champions.
Auckland Girls Grammar School, Zayed College for Girls, Wesley College, Ngā Puna O Waiōrea, and Mount Roskill Grammar and the defending champions from Papakura High School will be performing on the night.
Founded by Action Education and the South Auckland Poets Collective, Word - The Front Line is more than a competition, connecting young leaders from every walk of life and region of the city to share their stories, ideas, and skills through the art form of spoken word poetry.
Poets from this competition have garnered millions of views via social media, given TEDX talks, and performed internationally at literary arts festivals and poetry slams. Word - The Front Line has served as a platform for some of New Zealand’s brightest young leaders and artists, including Ngā Hinepūkōrero, Aigagalefili Fepulea'i Tapua'i, Sheldon Rua, Jai Selkirk, Takunda Muzondiwa, and many more.
This is the only event of its kind in Aotearoa. Powerful, healing, uncensored, and above all else, unflinchingly brave. Come see the voices of tomorrow speak today.
