Ngā Puke

by John Broughton

Waru, a young Māori farmer, and Angie, a budding Pākehā artist, accidentally meet on the lush hillside of Ngā Puke in Hawke’s Bay. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, they have an immediate connection and a beautiful friendship develops.

As war breaks out, Waru joins the Māori Battalion and Angie becomes a nurse. When their paths cross again on Crete, much has changed. Will the two make it through the horrors of war and back to the beautiful pastures of Pōrangahau?

'Hilariously funny, engrossing and heart-achingly touching' – Theatreview

Set against the backdrop of the Second World War, Ngā Puke is a unique chance to experience a revival of John Broughton's (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngai Tahu) classic tale of love and war. Originally premiered in 1990 by Jim Moriarty’s company Te Rakau Hua O Te Wao Tapu, the show is as vibrant and relevant today as it was 29 years ago.

WAITĪ Productions is a wahine-led theatre, television and film company that uplifts and empowers the Māori voice.

Mr Red Light

by Carl Bland

Mr Red Light is the story of a mysterious stranger who bursts through the doors of an Auckland pie shop after a bungled bank robbery, and takes its occupants hostage. Through the course of a tense siege, this complete outsider changes the lives of everyone in the shop.

A dramatic farce that moves from anarchic comedy to tense thriller, Mr Red Light is a highly visual work that transforms the banality of a pie shop into various incredible worlds.

This dynamic, New Zealand play by Nightsong (Te Pō, 360, Spirit House) is an ideal work to leave senior students feeling excited about life and inspired by theatre and its possibilities.

Commissioned by New Zealand Festival of the Arts and developed with the support of Auckland Live.

‘[Mr Red Light] is one of the most surreal, beautiful, hysterical and outrageously original shows to grace an Auckland stage this year’ – NZ Herald
