Show description
Traditionally, the rising of Matariki star cluster in the early morning winter sky is seen as a way to reflect on the past.
Setting off from Aotea Square, a new “star trail” activation, using cutting edge Augmented Reality technology, offers an unforgettable and family friendly adventure that combines star lore with a look toward the future.
A collective of 10 artists, led by Kereama Taepa (Te Arawa, Te Ātiawa), will provide their own interpretations of the stories surrounding the 10 stars - nine from Matariki cluster and Puanga. Each will tell a story with a virtual sculpture that will be visible by linking to an app and using a mobile device to move between sites.
Instructions on how to connect to the app and a QR code to assist will be located in Aotea Square* and will guide trailblazers via an online map through the Square, up through Myers Park to Karangahape Road on a hīkoi that is as educationally thrilling as it is culturally meaningful.
ARawhetū – combining culture with technology to connect past, present and future.
*Please note the downloadable app for ARawhetū will be available from Mon, 22 Jun at Aotea Square.
