Opera

Pasefika immigrants to Aotearoa NZ of the 1950’s - 70’s had a list of dreams for whanau - but opera singer wasn’t on it. Today Pasefika opera singers are global. But it wasn’t always this way. At the finale of the Te Ahurei Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Arts Festival we take you back to where it all began, with a once in a lifetime concert with the pioneers of Pacific opera, The O.Gs. Coming home to sing and to share their stories is a veritable who’s who of opera.

Aivale Cole (soprano), Ben Makisi (tenor), Siliga Sani Muliaumaseali’i (tenor), Eddie Muliaumaseali’i (bass baritone), Lotte Latukefu (mezzo soprano), and special guest star, Deborah Wai Kapohe (soprano).

Each has a different story.  All have the same story.

Celebrate the triumphs and learn about challenges faced by these pioneering wave makers.

An afternoon of storytelling through opera and pacific song  and movement.

Bellini, Mozart, Verdi, Strauss, Gershwin, Sondheim & more. With choir and orchestra conducted by Dr Opeloge Ah Sam. Choreography by Iosefa Enari MNZM. Conceived and directed by Siliga Sani Muliaumasealii.
