Message from the Artist:
The APO regret to announce that The Trusts Community Foundation Opera in Concert: Britten's Peter Grimes has been cancelled. This was a difficult decision for the APO, but with New Zealand's borders remaining closed due to COVID-19, the event has become unachievable.

Please still save the date.
If you would still like to experience some opera in concert, then keep the same evening of Friday 9 October free. A man on the outside, an unforgiving town. What harbour shelters peace?
The Borough is a bleak, cold fishing village on the North Sea. The fisherman Peter Grimes is mistrusted and disliked by the villagers. His boy apprentice has died accidentally at sea, and Grimes gets another apprentice from the workhouse, but the Borough gossips are watching…
This story of an outsider destroyed by his community is told by one of the great musical dramatists of the century. Against a backdrop of extraordinarily evocative sea music, and a vividly sharp portrait of the villagers, Britten draws the complex figure of a man who is brutal yet also sensitive and visionary.
The wonderful British tenor Toby Spence promises to be a superb Grimes, with British soprano Emma Bell as one of his few friends, the widow Ellen Orford.
Joining them are talented New Zealand singers Teddy Tahu Rhodes as Swallow, Jud Arthur as Hobson, and Amelia Berry and Natasha Wilson as the Nieces.
Peter Grimes is a gripping theatrical experience and an overpowering musical one. It will be a highlight of the year – don’t miss it.
