Birds of a Shadow is a playful and interactive installation where family, friends and strangers can work together to discover beautifully crafted bird images on the screen.
Participants match their body shapes to the bird’s shadow on the screen which reveals the full image of the digital birds.
The artists’ inspiration for the work was shadow puppets which encourage people to use their bodies in a playful manner. The images of the birds were chosen to showcase the unique and diverse ecosystem of New Zealand.
Birds of a Shadow was originally commissioned by Auckland Live in 2015 and inspired by Fale Ula, a site-specific installation by Niki Hastings-McFall during Auckland Arts Festival 2015.
