It’s more than just the cannons! In his biggest hit, Tchaikovsky employs the French and Russian national anthems in a musical description of the Napoleonic Wars, but he ingeniously ensures that his battlefield storytelling still obeys the strict rules of musical form. And who doesn't like a great orchestral composition where you get to blow things up in the middle of it?
