This concert is a major event. It’s the APO’s first international co-commission, and we’ve secured a major figure in contemporary music: the internationally acclaimed British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage. Gritty and earthy one moment, shimmering translucently the next, his music is full of surprises. 

The premiere of Sibelius’ First Symphony, meanwhile, announced the arrival of a unique new voice on the musical landscape. From its desolate opening to its fiery conclusion, this piece pushed music into a completely new direction. These two, big works frame Mendelssohn’s utterly delightful First Piano Concerto.
