Sofia Gubaidulina Fairytale Poem
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.3
Nielsen Symphony No.4 ‘The Inextinguishable’

The much-loved NZ pianist Michael Houstoun is, in his words, ‘folding up the tent’ in December 2020. It’s bittersweet news, but there could be no more fitting way for Giordano Bellincampi and the APO to farewell him than with ‘the Rach 3’, a mighty concerto for a mighty musician.

The Fairytale Poem by Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina veers from folk-inspired music into unexpectedly jazzy places.

Nielsen’s energetic, soaring symphony finishes the programme. ‘One word to indicate what Music alone is capable of expressing to the full,’ said the composer. ‘Music is Life, and like it, inextinguishable.’ Michael would agree.
