Vladimir Ashkenazy is simply one of the greatest musicians of our time. For his Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra début, we’ll hear music that he’s made his own. His long association with the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara is celebrated in Isle of Bliss. Here, ‘bliss’ is the soul’s transformation in death; Rautavaara describes ‘another reality, only really accessible through music’.

Gordon Hunt is the distinguished principal oboe at the UK's Philharmonia Orchestra, where Ashkenazy is conductor laureate, and with whom both men have recorded Strauss’ summery concerto.

Sibelius’ Second Symphony begins with unforgettable warmth, traverses a vast terrain and ends in exultation.
