In her distinguished career – latterly as the BBC’s Chief International Correspondent – Lyse Doucet has brought news from the world’s conflict zones, and the human stories within them, to millions.
In The Finest Hotel in Kabulshe uses the story of Afghanistan’s first luxury hotel – which opened in 1969 and has endured Soviet occupation, multiple coups, a grievous civil war, a US invasion and the rise, fall and rise of the Taliban in its 50 years – to craft a richly immersive history of modern Afghanistan.
In her first appearance at AWF, she joins Paula Penfold to reflects on an extraordinary life in the world’s geopolitical hotspots, and the remarkable Kabul hotel that helped her tell the story of a nation and its people.
