Show description

Roddy Doyle is one of Ireland’s finest and most beloved writers.

From his breakthrough novel The Commitments, later adapted into a major film and his wider Barrytown Trilogy The Snapper and The Van to The Woman Who Walked Into Doors, Smile, Love and his Booker Prize-winning Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, his work has captured the rhythms and voices of working class Dublin and beyond in fiction, short stories and screenplays.

In 2025, he moved from Booker Prize alumni to Chair of the Booker Prize Judges, reading more than 150 books alongside Ayòbámi Adébáyò, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chris Power and Kiley Reid to find the best work of literary fiction of the year.

In this special event, the exceptionally talented and ever-entertaining Doyle sits down with Michèle A’Court to discuss his impressive literary career, his unique year immersed in the books of others, and what he’s working on now that his reading load has lightened and he’s back at the writing desk.
