Show description

Barely an hour, nay minute, goes by without the US being the subject of a major news story.

The early weeks of 2026 alone have seen a military invasion of Venezuela; a threat to seize Greenland; fatal ICE shootings in Minneapolis; severe winter storms and a fractured Davos where President Trump was accused of rupturing the world order.

A country’s writers are often looked towards to make sense of things. What is the daily reality of being a writer in contemporary America right now? And whether writing fiction or non-fiction, how are writers keeping pace and making sense of this unprecedented chapter in their nation’s story?

Toby Manhire meets major American writer and Minneapolis bookshop owner Louise Erdrich, crime author SA Cosby and non-fiction author Deborah Baker to discuss.
