Show description

In this year’s third free organ concert, we welcome back international concert organist Christopher Wrench.

This time round he will perform works from the organ repertoire including what is often claimed to be a pinnacle of the romantic repertoire – Julius Reubke’s Sonata on the 94th Psalm.  Over the course of twenty-five minutes, it takes us on a profound journey. The work begins quietly with a theme that underpins it and the question, ’how long will the ungodly triumph?’. It ends on a furious fugue depicting God’s judgement and victory over evil. The work clearly reflects the influence of Reubke’s teacher, Franz Liszt and is an astonishing work for a 23-year-old composer who died just a year later.

Christopher Wrench is a graduate of Queensland and Vienna conservatories. He has regularly performed on the top organs round the world and is a frequent guest at festivals throughout Australia. Christopher is the winner of first prizes in competitions in Denmark, Australia and the UK.

This will be another great concert on Auckland’s magnificent Klais organ. Don’t miss it! These concerts fill up so don't delay, secure your seat in the Great Hall now.
