Spain is racked by civil war. The Conte di Luna courts Leonora, but she is in love with the gypsy troubadour Manrico, a soldier on the opposing side. The Conte’s forces capture Manrico by using his mother, Azucena, as bait. To free her lover, Leonora makes a fatal promise to marry the Conte. But Azucena is haunted by a terrible mistake from decades past.
Even for Verdi, Il Trovatore is full of hits: the famous ‘Anvil Chorus’ and ‘Di quella pira’ are just two highlights. And we’ve got a stellar cast for you.
The great Caruso once observed that all you need for a performance is ‘the four best singers in the world’, and ours are regulars at top European opera houses. He might also have added that the piece needs a conductor with an infallible theatrical touch. Giordano Bellincampi is the perfect musician for an opera of unstoppable dramatic power.
