Wellington’s infamously intemperate weather inspired something equally impressive in composer Salina Fisher. Rainphase originates from her time as composer in residence with the NZSO National Youth Orchestra and is a teeming, haunting work.
Winner of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2008, virtuoso violinist Karen Gomyo is a consummate musician, bringing to her performances an extraordinary zeal and attention to detail. Impressing New Zealand audiences in 2015 with her performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the orchestra, she returns for Alban Berg’s deliciously complex and deeply emotional Violin Concerto.
Maestro Edo De Waart explores the masterwork that is Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D major – Titan. This unequivocally modern symphony brings together varied musical influences to create a triumphant work. Titan announced the arrival of Mahler as a major talent who would later go on to revolutionise the symphonic form.
