Mendelssohn Violin Concerto

Schumann Symphony No.2

Beethoven Leonore Overture No.3

‘A violin concerto in E minor keeps running through my head,’ Mendelssohn wrote to a friend, ‘and the opening gives me no peace.’ This feverish creativity led to one of his finest works. Dutch violinist Isabelle van Keulen leads the charge in what has become one of the world’s favourite violin concertos.

Schumann struggled with illness while composing his Second Symphony, but there’s not a trace of this difficulty in this assured, extroverted music.

Beethoven was never quite satisfied with his only opera, in which the resourceful Leonore rescues her unjustly imprisoned husband. Her heroism is finely rendered in the third of the four overtures he wrote for it.

Free Organ Recital

The Auckland Town Hall Organ Trust, in association with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, presents a 30-minute recital at 6pm prior to each Bayleys Great Classics concert in Auckland Town Hall. Each recital features a different organist playing classics from the organ repertoire.
