New Zealand Symphony Orchestra NYO Firebird concert - Saturday 7 July – Auckland Town Hall

Due to high winds in Wellington, the NYO flight this morning was cancelled, preventing the Orchestra from departing Wellington as scheduled. They have been rebooked onto later flights and the NYO Firebird concert will go ahead but at a delayed start time of 8pm.  We look forward to seeing you tonight in Auckland and will post updates if there are any further changes.

DE FALLA Suites No. 1 and No. 2 from The Three-Cornered Hat
ANDRÉ JOLIVET Bassoon Concerto
JOSIAH CARR NYO Composer-in-Residence 2018 New Commission (World Premiere)
STRAVINSKY Suite from The Firebird (1945 version)

Jaime Martín takes the reins of the NZSO National Youth Orchestra for its mid-year concerts, inspired by Diaghilev’s early 20th-century ballet works and designed to spark the imagination.

Joining the Orchestra is the youngest principal player in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Principal Bassoon Todd Gibson-Cornish. He is a former member of the NYO and performs Jolivet’s Bassoon Concerto, one of the most difficult in the bassoon repertoire.

De Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat and Stravinsky’s The Firebird were both written for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. The Firebird was the start of a long collaboration between Diaghilev and Stravinsky, which included The Rite of Spring.

The concert also presents the world premiere of a new work  by the 2018 NYO Composer-in-Residence, Josiah Carr.
