Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Pathétique
David Grahame Taylor’s Embiosis is a stunning exploration of string sonorities and harmonies folded upon harmonies. Winner of the Orchestra Choice Award at the 2013 New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Todd Young Composer Awards, Taylor is a rising star of mesmerising talent.
Luxurious string textures also mark the works of Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Antonín Dvořák. Tchaikovsky’s stupendous Symphony No. 6 – the Pathétique contains all the unbridled rage and melancholy you expect from the Russian master, while Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor is a richly melodic drama.
Soloist Narek Hakhnazaryan is rightly celebrated for his ‘blazing virtuosity’ on the cello. Winner of the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition, he brings all his extraordinary skills to perform once more with the NZSO in this stunning concerto.
Conductor of the NZSO’s 2016 Grammy-nominated recording of Zhou Long works, Singaporean Maestro Darrell Ang leads the orchestra through this programme of supreme string colours and heart breaking melody.
