Conductor Johannes Fritzsch
Piano Michael Houstoun
Elgar Serenade for Strings
Lyell Cresswell Piano Concerto No.2 (World Premiere)
Prokofiev Symphony No.5
The perfect beginning to an evening of music (and the perfect end to your Thursday), Elgar’s Serenade is one of its composer’s sunniest, most light-hearted works.
One of New Zealand’s favourite pianists, Michael Houstoun, returns to perform the premiere of Lyell Creswell’s new piano concerto. Consisting of a number of short movements that make up a full length concerto, each movement will be based on a different chorale by J.S. Bach.
Prokofiev said his Fifth Symphony was ‘a work glorifying the human spirit’, and it covers epic territory. It’s broad, optimistic music, with the spiky sarcasm that only Prokofiev could write; a deeply felt love song in all but name.
