Barber The School for Scandal: Overture
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2
Korngold Symphony in F sharp
Rachmaninov’s towering concerto is a glamorous combination of heartfelt lyricism and fearless athleticism. New Zealander Henry Wong Doe returns to the APO to shine in one of the peaks of the pianist’s repertoire.
Equally opulent music from Korngold, who essentially invented the swashbuckling Hollywood soundtrack. The lush language of his film music made it into his deeply felt Symphony, but by the time it was performed, this glorious music was cruelly out of fashion.
If you only know Barber from his poignant Adagio for Strings, prepare to be surprised by this wickedly funny overture.
Henry Wong Doe’s performance is supported by the Templar Family Office.
