Beethoven The Creatures of Prometheus: Overture
R. Strauss Horn Concerto No.1
Rachmaninov Symphony No.2
Stefan Dohr, the principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, plays a concerto inspired by another star horn player. But even the renowned horn virtuoso Franz Strauss struggled with the technical difficulties of this effervescent work by his eighteen-year-old son.
A belief close to Strauss’ heart was the civilising power of art and it was also close to Beethoven’s: it was the subject of his ballet The Creatures of Prometheus, whose energetic overture depicts the raw excitement of artistic creation. To finish, we hear Rachmaninov’s warm-hearted, sprawling symphony, with its inexhaustible profusion of glorious Romantic melody.
