Writer and art critic Charles Darwent’s latest book Surrealists in New York, traces the meeting of Parisian artists fleeing war-torn Europe with the young American painters who would come to be known as the Abstract Expressionists.
He discusses his discoveries with Dr Sophie Matthiesson, Senior Curator International Art at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
