Show description

Symphony Kukai, a masterpiece composed by the renowned Chinese composer Zou Ye in 2023, honors the 1,250th anniversary of Kukai's birth and celebrates Sino-Japanese friendship.

It vividly captures the life and spirit of Kukai, who embarked on a perilous journey to China during the Tang dynasty to study under the esteemed Master Huiguo. Upon returning to Japan, Kukai introduced profound cultural and spiritual insights that shaped Japanese art, philosophy, and Buddhism, making him an eternal symbol of global cultural exchange.

The symphony's global tour, which began in August, has received overwhelming acclaim in Lanzhou, Kyoto, Tokyo, and London. The London performance, led by British conductor Derrick Morgan, was described as "absolutely beautiful," with Morgan stating that "The story unfolds in the music, resonating deeply and touching the heart. Kukai’s journey and teachings continue to inspire, even after a millennium."

On January 24, 2025, Auckland will be the fifth stop on the tour, ready to experience the extraordinary magic of this remarkable symphony.
