Welcome to “The Big Sing” - NZ’s largest choral festival!
Organised and run annually by the New Zealand Choral Federation, the event is open to choirs from any and all NZ secondary schools that perform at regional festivals. From these regional festivals, choirs are selected to be part of a national finale, and compete to be named NZ’s best secondary school choir.
Choirs of all sizes and abilities participate, singing music ranging from classical to contemporary art music; from music theatre to gospel; and from Maori and Pasifika to Hungarian and French music.
In this, the Auckland/ Northland regional festival, over 80 choirs from 44 schools will perform over a period of four days, with a gala concert on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings featuring a performance from each choir at that day’s festival.
This year more than 10,000 young people will participate in The Big Sing, and many count it as a highlight of their secondary school years. The event has been a springboard for at least one winner of NZ Idol and many of the contestants of TV1’s current series The Naked Choir have also been part of it. Some of our successful young opera singers also sang throughout their secondary school years with choirs that performed at The Big Sing.
Come and hear the outstanding musicianship and performance on show from NZ’s musical stars of the future.
