Ha Jin is the author of National Book Award for Fiction winner Waiting, and most recently of the darkly-comic The Boat Rocker – an examination of the moral dimensions of journalism via the tale of a Chinese expat working in New York who suspects the hype surrounding a Chinese bodice ripper.

Jin, who left China for good in 1985, writes from a position of both freedom and exile. The Boat Rocker however, notes The New York Times, “is no polemic masquerading as a novel”. Jin speaks with Michael Williams.
