Set in a small 19th century Russian town, news spreads that the Inspector General is coming incognito to assess its administration. Panic ensues among the town's officials, who are afraid of being exposed for their corruption and misconduct. But what follows is a case of mistaken identity which descends into amusing chaos.
The Inspector General is a sharp and timeless comedy that continues to be celebrated for its biting satire, memorable characters, and commentary on the human condition and government corruption. The satire in the play is a commentary on the flaws and absurdities of bureaucracy, human nature, and the pursuit of social status.
