Borodin’s opera Prince Igor is almost exclusively known from these extracts, which paint a splendidly exotic picture of nomad warriors sweeping across the Russian steppes. Alas, Borodin never had enough time to work on the piece, and when he died it was little better than fragments. His friends had to put the puzzle together and Graham Abbott shows us how.
